Chapter 21 – Aftermath

Ava shoved the limp form over onto his back. In a couple deft moves, she had her cuffs in place and had zip-tied the man’s legs.

She growled, “Someone better give me a fucking update!”

Emily yelled back as she pulled chunks of the pavilion free, “As soon as I’ve got them, you’ll know it.”

With a huff, Ava sprinted to the brickwork grill, and in a couple careful moves, she managed to make it onto the remains of the roof after two powerful leaps.

Her eyes scanned the perimeter from her newfound perch as she saw Sophie’s armed drones flooding into the area and heard her jet-powered screamers ripping by as she prepared to neutralize other threats.

Alex’s house was nestled on a hillside where a suburban series of houses had been carved out of the dense vegetation. Tall, dense tropical foliage lined each property, giving each lot a secluded feel.

Ava scanned the trees, making sure another attacker wasn’t nearby as Sophie completed yet another sweep of the area with her aerial bots.

In front of the house, Sophie’s speaker-equipped rolling delivery bots warned neighbors to stay inside and passersby to stay away. A line of rolling bots blocked off the roadway, redirecting cars around the neighborhood.

Ava’s black armor shone in the daylight as she held her automatic rifle at the ready. Defending Alex and his family took priority over keeping things covert. It was one of only a few exceptions to protocol.

There was a groan from Trish as she lifted herself from the ground, still half-covered in a cracked inky-dark shell that made her red hair look midnight black and frozen in place. Disoriented, she tripped and fell into a puddle of black liquid almost immediately, causing half the Goop to slip free from her body. Emily pulled her up and slung an arm around her side. In a few quick steps, she moved the team marksman off to the side and dove back into the rubble where the porch had collapsed.

Digging closer to where the back door should have been, she lifted a slab of the exterior wall. She heaved a wooden beam out of the way, and then another hefty chunk of the outer wall.

“Got the parents!” Emily yelled out.

Sean pushed and pulled, trying to get to his feet. Emily grabbed his cybernetic hand, which had been stripped bare of its flesh-like shell in the process of him trying to dig his way out.

He coughed and spluttered, but it looked like he was intact. Seeing he wasn’t in immediate danger, Emily left him kneeling in the debris of the house, and the strange liquid remains of the broken body armor that had been tucked into Jana’s shoes. Emily tugged at two boards that still lay over Jana. The woman looked dazed, and there was a thin trickle of blood from a cut next to her temple.

With a heave, Carla and Jennifer emerged from below the remnants of the picnic table, which had crumpled under a layer of roof tiles that had slid off, temporarily burying them.
